It probably goes without saying that human beings are critical to product lifecycles from assembly and manufacturing, to consumer use and acceptance, to maintenance and repair. This, by the way, includes the health and safety aspects of assembly operations. However, the human element is often considered late in the process, usually after production issues arise and often after workers have been injured.

Manufacturers are finding by incorporating ergonomics and human factors evaluations into the early stages of product and process design they can reduce the costs of redesigns. Moreover, such early considerations increase the feasibility of incorporating required design changes to both improve performance and reduce the risk of injuries. So, instead of working with reactive mindsets and constantly checking their rearview mirrors, by employing DHM software manufacturers can remain proactive and out in front of the curve in terms of understanding the human body’s reactions to both the workplace and products.

What is DHM?

Digital Human Modeling is the digital representation of humans in a virtual environment. The human representation is biomechanically based and built using anthropometric databases. DHM simulates human impact of work, product design, and external stressors. In other words, DHM uses highly sophisticated and accurate human models to design products, processes, and environments for optimal human performance and safety.

The DHM tools from Siemens Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Software can be coordinated with and/or are offered within a variety of Siemens’ solutions such as NX, Process Simulate, Tecnomatix, Jack Human Simulation and Ergonomics, Jack Classic, and Teamcenter Visualization. DHM can also coordinate with software from other sources.

The webinar will deliver a detailed overview of DHM and how it is used to integrate human measurements and aspects of human ergonomics in design tools. The bulk of the session will be spent introducing participants to Siemens’ Jack and exploring the answers it can provide, including two of Jack’s optional toolkits – Occupant Packaging and Task Analysis.

What is Jack?

Jack is a human modeling and simulation tool that enables you to improve the ergonomics of your product designs and to refine industrial tasks. Jack and its optional toolkits bring human-centered design tools to your virtual environments for comprehensive ergonomic analyses of the human factors of your new designs – before any physical prototypes are built.

Jack enables you to size/scale your human models to match worker populations. You can test design and operational aspects of a wide variety of human factors, including injury risk, timing, user comfort, reachability, line-of-sight, energy expenditure, fatigue limits and other important parameters.

Johan Molenbroek is an Associate Professor of Applied Ergonomics in Industrial Design Engineering Department at Delft University of Technology. To assist students in designing with the end user in mind, the school developed its own DHM application. It eventually became obsolete.

Molenbroek established the criteria for the replacement software. He says the market study of available applications showed Jack “was the only one to meet our requirements unreservedly. Requirements that, in my opinion, should apply to almost every user.”
